Johto does not need another coat of paint as much as it needs a better rhythm. Heart and Soul brings the Gold, Silver, and Crystal adventure to a Game Boy Advance foundation, borrows heavily from HeartGold and SoulSilver, and lets you decide how much of modern Pokémon belongs in that familiar world. A partner follows you through the trees; Kanto waits beyond the League; the battle rules are yours to tune.
To try Pokemon Heart and Soul online in a browser, prepare the project's GBA build from its official instructions, then upload your lawful .gba file to Rebit. This is an Emerald-based hack, not a Nintendo DS HeartGold or SoulSilver ROM. Rebit supports GBA files, but this guide is not a completed compatibility playtest of every HnS release.
The most important preparation step is easy to miss: the developers say saves from before 2.0 are incompatible with 2.0. Back up the old adventure and start the new version separately.
What Heart and Soul actually remakes
The project describes itself as a remake of GSC and a demake of HGSS, built on Modern Emerald and pokeemerald-expansion. That distinction explains its appeal. You get a one-screen GBA game with Johto and Kanto content, rather than a DS game squeezed awkwardly into a different interface.
The creator's feature list includes the full Johto story and Kanto postgame from HGSS, following Pokémon, day/night encounters, Gym Leader rematches, two Safari Zones, and music associated with the DS remakes. It also documents deliberate differences: an adjusted level curve, berries replacing Apricorns for Kurt's balls, and no Pokéathlon Dome.
Not every Pokémon visible in the overworld is an encounter. The developers distinguish background Pokémon that indicate notable route encounters from decorative inhabitants in towns. That is a useful expectation to set before spending ten minutes trying to interact with every sprite.

Why the 2.0 changes matter beyond a bigger feature list
Version 2.0 rebuilds the game on pokeemerald-expansion. The visible additions include all 92 HGSS TMs, expanded Pokégear radio and rematch features, refreshed Kanto maps, hidden items and the Itemfinder, and further postgame content.
These additions work together. More move access gives a team room to develop without replacing every early partner. Trainer rematches create reasons to revisit routes. An improved Kanto makes the second region more than a victory lap. You are choosing a longer relationship with a team, not just a faster route to the credits.
The Pokégear details also matter for short browser sessions. The project says its timekeeping does not track weekdays and that relevant events are progression-based. Its clock options separately allow a platform real-time clock or a simulated clock, with one game day passing per hour of gameplay. Do not use an old HGSS weekday schedule as a definitive HnS event guide.
Choose your rules before choosing your team
Heart and Soul offers a recommended preset and custom settings. For a first run, use the recommended preset unless you already know which older mechanics you want to preserve. Record any custom choices alongside your save backup; two HnS playthroughs can have meaningfully different rules.
| Setting | Why it changes your decisions |
|---|---|
| Physical/special split | Determines whether damage category follows each move or the older type-based system |
| Fairy type | Changes both relevant Pokémon and moves, affecting coverage and defensive planning |
| Movepool | Offers Gen 3 learnsets or Gen 7 learnsets with HnS-specific changes |
| Reusable TMs | Changes whether experimentation consumes a limited teaching resource |
| Nature Mints | Can make nature adjustment available after Badge 3 or only after completion |
| Level caps | Can limit your team relative to the next Gym's strongest or weakest Pokémon |
A physical attacker with an attractive elemental move is a good example of why the split matters. Check the move's category in your chosen ruleset instead of assuming that the species' reputation tells you how to build it. The same applies to Fairy coverage: advice written for a Fairy-enabled run may be wrong for a classic-type run.
For a relaxed first adventure, avoid stacking several challenge restrictions simply because they are available. Learn the revised encounters and bosses first. In particular, the documented Hard Nuzlocke option deletes the save after a wipe. That is a consequential rules choice, not an ordinary difficulty slider.
Does Heart and Soul have Pokémon from every generation?
The answer depends on the mode. The documented normal roster centers on Generations 1–3 and their later evolutions, with stated exclusions. The randomizer supports Pokémon from Generations 1–9. Those are not interchangeable claims.
Modern abilities and items also do not mean every modern species is naturally obtainable. Before planning a team around a particular favorite, check the HnS player documentation for the mode and release you intend to use.
If you enable randomization, decide whether route encounters should stay consistent or change repeatedly. The documented Map Seeded and Chaos options can change the experience from “learn a new encounter table” to “expect the unexpected every time.” A conventional encounter walkthrough becomes much less useful in the latter case.

How to prepare Heart and Soul for Rebit
Rebit provides the emulator and library, not copyrighted ROMs. Use a backup you are legally entitled to use and obtain the patch or build instructions from the HnS project. Check the required base revision rather than assuming any Emerald file will work.
- Keep the original game backup untouched and prepare the patched output separately.
- Record the HnS release number. Do not use the filename alone as proof of a version.
- Open Rebit's Upload tab and select Game Boy Advance, or use Auto.
- Choose the completed
.gbafile and select Upload ROM. A patch file by itself is not a playable game. - Open the new library entry and confirm the expected title screen appears.
- Start a short test, choose your rules, and make a normal in-game save.
- Open the Rebit menu and select Export In-Game Save. Confirm the reminder if shown, then wait for completion.
- Reopen the game and verify Continue restores the correct trainer before beginning a long run.
The illustrated Rebit upload guide covers file selection on phones and computers. On a small screen, test movement, menu navigation, and battle selection before committing to a challenge run. A mis-tap is annoying in an ordinary adventure and much more consequential under permadeath rules.
Keep 1.x saves, 2.x saves, and emulator states separate
The project README explicitly warns about the pre-2.0 save break. Renaming an old save does not convert its data. Loading an old emulator state does not solve that incompatibility either: it restores an older running program state alongside assumptions the rebuilt game may no longer share.
Keep an untouched copy of the old ROM build and its matching save. For later updates, follow that release's migration instructions; the 2.0 warning is not proof that all subsequent releases are mutually compatible. A normal in-game save is usually the appropriate starting point for supported migrations, but only the creator can confirm whether a particular update supports one.
Use Rebit's save controls to export and download a backup before updating. Keep save states for convenient resuming within the same build, not as your only archive.
Is Heart and Soul online co-op?
The project documents trades and link battles. That does not establish shared-world co-op, and we have not verified this particular build's link behavior in Rebit.
The developers also exclude compatibility with official Pokémon games, HnS 1.x, Modern Emerald, and unrelated pokeemerald-expansion projects; community forks are not automatically compatible. Shared source code is not a shared trading protocol guarantee.
If shared exploration is your main goal, read the separate Pokemon Quetzal co-op guide. For HnS, choose the game because you want its Johto adventure, not because a browser launch promises multiplayer.
Heart and Soul or SoulGold?
Choose Heart and Soul for a customizable Johto-and-Kanto journey close to the GSC/HGSS structure. Choose SoulGold if expanded Johto, an early Battle Factory, achievement trophies, and postgame multi-ability progression sound more compelling. They share ancestry but should have separate files, saves, and expectations.
Do I need a DS emulator?
No. This Heart and Soul project is a GBA hack. The official HeartGold and SoulSilver games are separate Nintendo DS titles.
Which version should I install?
Use the current release instructions from the project you choose. Distinguish the original project's releases from community forks; do not combine one fork's advertised features with another fork's patch.
Why does my old save fail?
First check whether it predates 2.0. If it does, the documented incompatibility is expected. If it does not, check the exact build, supported save format, and migration notes before changing anything.
